Is having a blog ‘niche’ really necessary?

If you follow me on Twitter then you may have seen me tweet that I’ve felt a bit uninspired writing your bog standard ‘here’s a pink suede jacket I bought recently’ style post. While I will always love beauty and fashion, I want to increase the value my readers will get from my content.  I’m still finding my feet within the world of YouTube but I hope eventually this will translate on there too.

I’ve spent a lot of time recently trying to work out what my ‘niche’ is. Everyone says you have to have one right? Otherwise you won’t stand out in this saturated blogging industry. However I’m not sure this is entirely true. I spend a lot of time searching for new bloggers as part of my job and let’s face it, no one is doing anything revolutionary. We’re all just creating an online identity by sharing our lives and recommendations with others.

Obviously it’s definitely a positive to have a clear sense of what your ‘brand’ is and the kind of audience you want to attract, particularly if you want to work with specific brands.  However, it can be far too easy to fall into the comparison trap. Comparing what has worked for some people, whether it’s gaining followers, or working with a brand will only help you to a certain extent.

I’ve been writing on here for five years now (post on this to follow!) and if I’m honest, my creative drive goes up and down. One minute I’m ready to give it up due to the time it takes to produce regular content alongside a full-time job. Then the next minute I’m raring to go again. Circumstances may not always end up how I expect them to but I’m beginning to accept that this should be embraced and is what makes life so wonderful.

So it’s time to practice what I preach and make this whole thing more fun again. I’ll aim to post at least once a week on here. it might not be on a set day but I’ll never be far away. Life happens, I have a full time job and it’s become increasingly important for me to make sure I have time to just chill, rather than stressing myself out over whether I’ve got enough photos ready to Instagram or filmed a video for the weekend. Are you subscribed to my channel on YouTube by the way?

I know from personal experience, if I’m really interested in a blogger or YouTuber, I don’t mind how often they post, or what time of day. It’s the quality of their content that counts. So by allowing myself to take a bit more time to create content I’m hoping I’ll produce more helpful and informative content for you guys.

You also may have noticed I’ve had my logo revamped. I couldn’t be more pleased with the custom lettering, created by the lovely Giada at Miel Cafè Design. What do you think?

The quote underneath the logo is a hint as to the direction I want to take my blog in. I want to focus more on personal development as that’s where my interests have developed (pun not intended). I’ll still post about beauty, fashion, food and travel but under an over-arching theme of ‘living well’. While I know Instagram has taken over blogs in many ways, I love to write far more than an Instagram caption will allow.

I believe that if we ourselves are feeling good and happy within ourselves, then everything else in life falls into place. I’ve noticed it in my own life. When I’m feeling content with things and just go with the ‘flow’, everything seems to come easier than when I try to control situations. I think it’s particularly important to give yourself time to breathe when producing this type of work too. My best blog post ideas or videos always come at the most unexpected times when I’m not thinking about it. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that my niche is just being myself and sharing my life and my experiences in my way. I think that should be your niche too.

I agree, I don’t think you need a specific niche. I just kinda write about what i feel like and if you want to move to more personal development then go for it!

Exactly, I keep telling myself that the most important thing is to enjoy it above anything else! Numbers don’t matter if you’re not happy with the content you’re producing. Have a lovely day Jenny!xx

Loved this! The idea of a niche is one I struggle with a lot – I am new to blogging, still experimenting with what I like blogging about, and frequently see tips telling me I need to find my niche and stick to it. But when I think about blogs I really love, the thing that makes me love them is often their writing style or personality, so I think sharing what I want in my own way is going to be what I stick to for now 🙂 Love the outfit by the way, those mules are an absolute dream! Hi Sophie, thanks for your lovely comment! It’s definitely about experimentation. Our interests change as people so I think it’s natural for our blogs to reflect this. I love your blog and Instagram so keep doing what you’re doing! I also like the people behind my favourite blogs (sometimes more than the blogs themselves haha). And thank you, the mules are New Look – an absolute bargain! Have a wonderful day 🙂 xx

I have never believed in niches nor in time laps to post. I just post when I am ready and when I have something useful to say. I love to post about real things that I know my readers are going to enjoy and things that people really need to read.

Oh man, finally someone else that feels the same way as me. I literally couldn’t care less how often or when a blogger posts, as long as they’re content is good then that’s really all that matters to me, so it’s funny that people put such a heavy emphasis on that!

Hi Julia, I’m so pleased I’m not the only one who feels that way! Sometimes there’s too much debate instead of just doing! Although I may be adding to the debates myself haha…thanks for reading!xx
