How I intend to make 2018 my most positive year yet

There’s a lot to be said for positive thinking and while I’ve been reading self development books since I was quite young, it’s now become quite trendy to educate yourself on how to be more positive and how your mental state affects all aspects of your life. I said in my last post that I’m not making an big resolutions this year but I think the main over-arching behavioural change I want to make in my life is to be more positive. I’d say generally I’m quite a ‘glass half full’ type of person when it comes to most things and I think my friends would agree. However my family probably get the brunt of a bad mood if I’ve had a long day or am feeling stressed. Likewise my own inner critic can be a bit harsh at times so it’s the negative self talk that I want to try and monitor more. There are five main things I’m going to do more of in 2018 to improve on this, so read on if you also want to know how to be more positive in 2018.

 

HOW TO BE MORE POSITIVE IN FIVE WAYS

 

Appreciation lists. Nearly every self-help book I’ve read stresses the importance of gratitude. How do you expect more good to come into your life if you aren’t grateful for what you have? It’s worth thinking about. Grab a pretty notebook or even use your phone and write a list of 10 things you appreciate in your life right now. Whether it’s having a roof over your head, a new makeup product to try today or simple your health. We shouldn’t wait until things aren’t working well in our life to focus on the good.  Do this every day if you can, I’m going to try to make it a habit, even if I’m just mentally listing things.

 

A happy list. Can you tell I like a good list?! This differs slightly from the first point in that this is a list you make of the things that really make you happy. Write down the things that make your heart sing and try and do a minimum of one of these things a day. Refer to it when you feel a bad mood coming on or need a pick me up. Everyone’s list will be different but some ideas to get you started are: dancing to your favourite songs, meeting a friend for brunch, cooking yourself your favourite healthy meal, going for a run, lying in bed watching Gossip Girl, trying out a new hairstyle… (sounds like a good list to me 😉 )

 

Live more in the present. One of my favourite life-changing books Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, centres on the premise that we will never be happy while we’re looking at the past or the future. All we ever have is the here and now so the sooner we stop stressing over what happened or what we want to happen then we achieve more peace and happiness. And that’s all we ever really want.

 

Meditate daily. There are so many apps nowadays that can help you meditate if you’re a beginner. I like the Calm app for soothing nature sounds and you can set a timer on it too. I think 15 minute of just sitting and quietening your mind is one of the most beneficial things you can do to improve your life. There are endless studies on the benefits of meditation for reducing stress, improving health and so much more. Some of the most successful business leaders and inventors in history have emphasised the importance of meditation. Seriously try starting your day with a period of stillness and you’ll be amazed at how much smoother your day goes. It’s really not all about hustle and hard work even though that’s what society wants you to believe.

 

Finding my tribe. Your vibe attracts your tribe is definitely a saying I agree with. Often we bond with people who have a similar outlook on life to us. So if you find yourself attracting negative people into your life you may want to take a look at your attitude because without even realising it you could be emitting an equally negative vibe. This year I want to strengthen the wonderful friendships I already have – by being better at calling and meeting up more – as well as make new friends with similar interests to me. Blogging and social media has meant that I’ve made some really good friends who I otherwise would never have met. So whenever I’m having one of those days where I feel a bit overwhelmed by things, that’s what I’ll remind myself.

    I could not agree more!! gratitude is so important! Its something I always forget about! I was listening to something today that said gratitude and fear don’t co-exist, so if you want to overcome your fear and tackle your dreams- practice gratitude! It really struck me!

    I do try to be positive, but I must admit I’m not the best at remembering to be grateful. Making a list of things to be grateful for is a great idea! x

      You definitely have to be quite disciplined with it but I find writing down helps me focus on it. Plus the more I do it, it almost become like a habit. Good luck!xx
